Keeping The City Clean

If you own a piece of Tallahassee US real estate, then you know that the appearance of the city itself is directly tied to the value of your investment. A clean city is a desirable location to live, and home owners will reap the benefits of that reputation when it comes time to sell. Let's take a look at some of the municipal initiatives underway in Tallahassee which keep the city and the surrounding environment in the best shape possible.

Urban Planning

Any city initiatives started at the capitol level had better be adhered to by the government buildings themselves, and in this area Tallahassee is certainly not deficient. The city fathers began projecting usages of space and streamlined city planning as early as the 1960s. The planning included public green space, dense residential zoning, and commercial areas. All efforts, from lagoon cleaning to graffiti clean up, are encouraged in order to keep the core clean.

Green Initiatives

The city of Tallahassee is Certified Green, which means that it has been recognized by the state of Florida's Green Building Coalition as a municipality which puts an emphasis on green power and retaining natural resources.

Tallahassee received this recognition due to several different programs geared towards minimizing the city's ecological footprint.

First among these programs is the city's waste water division, which was ISO certified in 2004. Built on a platform of pollution prevention, compliance, and improvement, the division encourages industry and residents alike to use cutting edge science in order to stay green. Businesses are encouraged by law to use the most efficient water treatment chemicals on the market in order to recycle waste water back into the natural cycle.

The new Solid Waste building in the city has gone green in a number of different ways. First of all, there is the general purpose of the building itself. Today, it uses a number of different tools, from Y strainers to stainless filters, to separate water from waste.

In addition, the building has received LEED Silver certification for the systems within the structure itself. Waterless toilets and urinals, and other measures, have helped to reduce the amount of water used in the building by over 60%!

One of the most innovative approaches used by the city of Tallahassee as far as reducing its impact on the environment is its use of alternative powers. Solar energy projects are encouraged as well as funded, with many public buildings electing sun energy over fossil fuels. In addition, you will find city excavators using a vacuum pump system over more invasive means for minor repair and construction work.

And, of course, the local waste disposal initiatives continue to march towards reduction of landfill usage. Recycling programs, where each household receives a reusable plastic container to separate their recyclable goods from garbage, have been in place for quite a while. It's easy for citizens and great for the environment!

The city of Tallahassee has been recognized by various organizations for their efforts to keep it clean and green. Home owners can see these efforts reflected in the price of their real estate and their enjoyment of the city!
